Product Description Every dog owner must make a choice: Do you want a fearful and submissive pet, or do you want a happy, joyful, and well-mannered member of the family?
Tamar Geller's mission in life is to teach her cruelty-free method of "life coaching" for dogs and their people. Her revolutionary play-training uses mutual understanding and respect -- and puts an end to outdated methods that rely on physical exhaustion, choke chains, prong collars, dominance rollovers, or stressful aggression of any kind.
A former Israeli intelligence officer who witnessed the horrors of military dog training methods, Tamar went on to observe wolves in the wild. She discovered that wolves educate and socialize their cubs with games, bonding, and body language, not dominance or punishment. As a result, she developed teaching systems that address a dog's authentic nature, part wolflike and part toddlerlike. Learning can be a positive experience that dogs enjoy and look forward to, and we can actually make it fun for our dogs to listen to us and behave as we want them to.
Tamar's insights have brought dog training into the twenty-first century, and her groundbreaking techniques have won the approval of the Humane Society of the United States, for which she is a longtime advisor. Her celebrity clients include Oprah Winfrey, Ben Affleck, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Owen Wilson, and the Osbournes, and she has appeared as an expert on the Today show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Animal Planet, and more.
In The Loved Dog, Tamar gives you all the instruction, insights, and tips you need to teach your dog good manners, as well as to troubleshoot specific problems and unwanted behaviors. She helps you and your dog learn a common language, resulting in a loving, respectful relationship that will bring you years of joy and companionship. Tamar's play-training approach is so gentle, even children can get involved.
Whether you use Tamar's methods to raise a puppy or teach an old dog new tricks, you'll love The Loved Dog.
The Best Dog Book I have readAugust 29, 2010 BobL(New York) In my opinion, this book is as the title says, the best dog book I have read. I have purchased at least a half dozen books on dog training, etc, but this one has it all. It gives a lot of insight into how dogs think, at least as best we humans can figure out, and as Tamar explains things, this knowledge does let us get dogs to follow our instructions very well. We had our dog at private trainig lessons that cost us 200 bucks for 4 hours, but our dog was not able to do as we asked him to do. After reading this book, it was possible to get it done. Our dog is a Chihuahua, and they are very smart, and very stubborn as well. I was able to buy this book for less than 10 bucks including shipping through Amazon.com! It was sold as new, and it arrived in pristine condition.
Pretty good, but I was hoping for moreAugust 6, 2010 Maureen Soules(Twin Cities) "The Loved Dog" gave me lots of good ideas for understanding a dog's behavior and how to start training our puppy, but the first 7 or 8 chapters are all on Tamar's background. While it was interesting, I bought the book to learn about my dog, not the author.
Also, there is no index, so if you want to look up what she has to say about barking, you have to go back and skim the entire chapter to find it. This is not an instructional book, so don't expect "5 steps for housebreaking." She writes it like a conversation, not as instructions, so the format was a little disappointing.
However, if you start tagging and dog-earing the pages, (sorry for the pun!) you will find a lot of really helpful information on working with and understanding your dog. I like the book, but I also enrolled in obedience school for some actual instruction.
THIS METHOD REALLY WORKS- I used it!July 13, 2010 L. Grimsley(Monroe, MI) First, I will say that YES, I have read this book. YES, I have a dog, and tried the training methods in it. NO, I do not care who the author is, or what celebrities she worked for.
That out of the way, I will say that I was skeptical about the book at first. The title sounded touchy/feely, and I wasn't too concerned with my dog's 'psychology' at the beginning. My dog is a ten year old Jack Russell Terrier, and while he is a good dog, he was not well trained. I checked about a dozen dog training books out of the library, and this is the only one I would recommend. Yes, the first few chapters are about the author, how she became a trainer, and the psychology behind the method. You can skip these if you like, and go straight to the training. I saw immediate results, even when I was just fooling around, before I finished reading the book. I was able to cure my dog's incessant whining in the car in only two days- after 10 years of frustration. I have seen an improvement in other areas as well, things we haven't even worked on yet. I used the alpha roll for years, and after a week of using this training method, my dog was showing me much more respect. One 'shazam' moment for me- the author states that you can't really tell a dog what you DON'T want him to do; he won't understand. You have to tell him what you DO want him to do. Instead of 'don't jump on people' you tell him to 'sit.' I now understand where I went wrong in my past training attempts, and why this new method was so effective.
The author goes on occasional tangents about the cruelty of past training methods, but for the most part, the training sections are very clear, concise directions on HOW TO GET RESULTS WITH YOUR DOG. I strongly recommend this book. I had initially borrowed it from the library, but have since bought myself a copy, and copies for several of my friends. Give it a try!

I loved this book and found it answered so many things about a loving way to be in relationship with all others. I wish I had had this to read when I was raising my children. I have sent it to those I love everywhere.
An Autobiograpy or dog training?April 11, 2010 Suzanne Schumacher(Temecula, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The best training info I got in this book was the few pictures in the center. The rest appeared to be an autobiography of the Author, an ex Israeli soldier. If you are looking for a structured training manual, look further. This isn't it. Most of the few things that are mentioned are common sense ideas. I think we know not to yell at our dog...we don't need a chapter on it. Sorry, as much as I like this Author as a person, this book is not what I expected.
