Product Description Every dog owner must make a choice: Do you want a fearful and submissive pet, or do you want a happy, joyful, and well-mannered member of the family?
Tamar Geller's mission in life is to teach her cruelty-free method of "life coaching" for dogs and their people. Her revolutionary play-training uses mutual understanding and respect -- and puts an end to outdated methods that rely on physical exhaustion, choke chains, prong collars, dominance rollovers, or stressful aggression of any kind.
A former Israeli intelligence officer who witnessed the horrors of military dog training methods, Tamar went on to observe wolves in the wild. She discovered that wolves educate and socialize their cubs with games, bonding, and body language, not dominance or punishment. As a result, she developed teaching systems that address a dog's authentic nature, part wolflike and part toddlerlike. Learning can be a positive experience that dogs enjoy and look forward to, and we can actually make it fun for our dogs to listen to us and behave as we want them to.
Tamar's insights have brought dog training into the twenty-first century, and her groundbreaking techniques have won the approval of the Humane Society of the United States, for which she is a longtime advisor. Her celebrity clients include Oprah Winfrey, Ben Affleck, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Owen Wilson, and the Osbournes, and she has appeared as an expert on the Today show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Animal Planet, and more.
In The Loved Dog, Tamar gives you all the instruction, insights, and tips you need to teach your dog good manners, as well as to troubleshoot specific problems and unwanted behaviors. She helps you and your dog learn a common language, resulting in a loving, respectful relationship that will bring you years of joy and companionship. Tamar's play-training approach is so gentle, even children can get involved.
Whether you use Tamar's methods to raise a puppy or teach an old dog new tricks, you'll love The Loved Dog.
Absolutely wonderfulJanuary 31, 2010 Jennifer Mark Krabacher(Nashville, TN) Love this book. It is amazing to read a book based around training with love. Absolutely wonderful and I'm blessed to have it.
Had to put it the recycling binJanuary 19, 2010 J.D.(Chicago, IL) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A friend got me this book as a present. Seriously, this lady thinks she can fix any dog problem with treats, treats and more treats. How many treats do you need to rehabilitate an ex-fighting pitbull? 1,000,000.00???
I wasn't gona give the book back and offend my friend like "take this worthless thing back", so I put it in the recycle bin behind my building. Maybe they can print something useful with the pulp.
Absolutely the best dog training book I have ever read!December 28, 2009 Cult Doctor(USA) Truly a compassionate and yet extremely effective approach to forming a relationship with your friend. I've read several other books that were helpful, but this one has an overall theme. Should be a required read for new dog owners. Heck, we don't even require ANY training to have a child. Fantastic how these techniques can be applied to a dog of any age! Start now! Anyways.. loved the book, easy and pleasant read, applying the directions with great success. Thank you Tamar for this wonderful book and for the Operation Heros and Hounds program. Semper Fi.
Wish I would have known about this sooner!August 18, 2009 C. Quino(Texas) You know the adage - You can't teach an old dog new tricks. That's no necessarily true, but it is harder. I wish I would have stumbled upon Tamar's fantastic line of all natural dog food at HEB way sooner than I had, because that little trip to the grocery changed the way that not only my dog eats, but how I go about her training. A couple thousand dollars later on aggressive training and behavioral manipulation - my dog came home a scared robot that was afraid to have a personality! I LOVE her personality; the playfulness, tug-o-wars with my socks, etc. Those are the moments that add levity to the seriousness of life and isn't that why we have companion animals anyway? Tamar's book is filled with useful tips on how to respectfully (for us and them) change the learned and patterned behaviors that we love to think we have nothing to do with. SO much of the book sheds light on how we are self-sabotaging the training and being unclear to our pets. She adds light-hearted anecdotes and real life stories between the advice. I'd love to have her come to the house and work on some trouble spots with my Great Dane. That would be an awesome bonus! Pick this book up if you are tired of hearing that your dog is just bad - that's ridiculous! It takes time, patience, and an introspective look at ourselves to identify where we are making mistakes...Tamar helps us get to those epiphanies quicker!! Thank heavens!
There are much better training books out thereAugust 8, 2009 Elaine Mensa(Chicago) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is nothing new in here, and it is not presented in a helpful fashion. The author talks more about herself than dog training. She has no new insights to share. It seemed to me after reading this book that the only reason it got written is to put the pretty author on the front cover. It also confused me that the introduction was by Humane Society of the U.S. president. He said "her teaching is in line with our goals." HSUS stated goal is to end pet ownership, which they describe as enslavement. How is having a trained dog in line with their goals? Curious.
For someone seriously interested in dog training, you need Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor, one of the Monks books, The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell and then a positive step by step training guide by Andrea Arden or Cesar Milan or Pat Miller. I would also throw in Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs by Sharon Sakson, which shows you how far you can get if you bond with your dog and learn to understand him.
