Dogs and other pets needing blood transfusions and other life saving procedures are facing shortages, leading animal blood blanks to ask for dog blood donations. The problem in the US Northwest State of Washington is especially great right now. Dog owners with healthy dogs between one and six years old, and who weigh no less than 55 pounds, are encouraged to contact ACCES ( Animal Critical Care & Emergency Services - Seattle) at 206-364-1660 if you are in their area. Dogs have different blood types and there are some breeds that are essentially universal donors. If you have a Greyhound, Boxer, German Shepherd, Staffordshire Pit Bull Terrier, Doberman Pinscher or Irish Wolfhound you are asked to bring your healthy dog in for evaluation as a blood donor.
