"Safe" puppy food?
« on: 05/09/07 12 AM »

Howdy All,

My biggest baby, Mystic Blue Bess (Bess is her name), had her puppies a couple weeks ago, and now I'm looking forward to weaning them to regular food.  However, with all the recalls and such, I'm very leary of commercial puppy foods.  So far, I'm trusting Pedigree foods, but that's mainly just because my dogs all eat the same food, and no problems have surfaced yet.  I don't really trust trying a new food, even if it is Pedigree, especially since I noticed that Pedigree Puppy food has Corn Gluten listed as it's third ingredient.  Corn Gluten was found to be contaminated with melamine in South Africa, so I don't trust it here.  I'd try asking my vet, but I bet they'll direct me to some Science or Presricption Diet food, and several of those have been implicated in the recalls, so I don't trust them at all now.

I may try preparing homemade food for them, but what food do I make for weaning puppies?  My other option is some kind of raw food or something, but I'm not sure what to look for.  Any advise will be appreciated.

The puppies are mutts, if it means anything for their diet.  The mother, Bess, is a Blue Heeler-Labradore mix, and the father, Truman, is a Manchester Terrier or Min Pin (not sure which, since he was a dumped stray).

Later,
Cory

You can find at list at http://hubpages. com/hub/Dog_Food_Safe_To_Feed_After_The_Dog_Food_Recall

I was searching online with the same question, because I just fed my new puppy Cesar's and he got diarrhea. It apparently was on the safe list but then they got some reports of dogs getting sick from it.

Some of the foods on the safe list are Acana, Back to Basics, Bravo, Champion, Dad's, Dogswell, Go! Natural, Halo, Life's Abundance, Newman's Own, Pet Promise, Wellness and Wysong, but there are a lot more.  I know Newman's Own and Pet's Promise can be trusted. They use all natural ingredients and no weird stuff. It's a bit pricey, but it's cheaper than vet bills!
