The Late Great Sam, World's Ugliest Dog

The contest, judged by readers of DogExplorer.com, ran from October 6, 2005, through November 15, 2005.

A clear leader in a pack of six ugly dogs, Sam took this final prize in the first contest open to entrants from around the world and voted on by members of the public. Sam was a Chinese Crested dog.

"While we are saddened at DogExplorer.com at the loss of Sam, we are honored to have known him and had him as a participant," said the publisher of DogExplorer.com, Craig Schmitman. "Sam owed his very life to Susie Lockheed, who fostered and then adopted him when no one else dared," Schmitman added. "In turn, Sam brought Susie untold joy and a fiancé, a perfect illustration of why people should consider adopting older, less attractive dogs," concluded Schmitman

In Sam's name, Susie Lockheed will receive a gift certificate for pet supplies and a "Go Between" collapsible food and water bowl from sponsor Ruff Wear, For Dogs On The Go® ( www.ruffwear.com ).
