A sad milestone must be noted as a dog described as the world's oldest is dead at 21 years. Called Chanel, the dachshund had become a bit of an internet celebrity in recent years with lots of attention from the mass media.
Published reports say Chanel died of natural causes at home on Long Island in the community of Port Jefferson Station. A shining example of successful pet adoption, the dachshund was adopted from a shelter in Virginia when only six weeks old.
There are also reports of another dog owner claiming to have the world's oldest dog. Called Max, the owner in Louisiana says the dog just had its 26th birthday in August 2009! That assertion is still waiting official confirmation.
