These products are used as “binding” or “stabilizing” ingredients in commonly processed foods such as bread, pasta and baby formula. The FDA stressed that to date there is no evidence that any melamine-contaminated food has reached the public.

Contaminated pet food was fed to hogs in five states intended for human consumption. One Missouri poultry farm was identified as possibly contaminated, according to a statement on the American Veterinary Medical Association website. All identified animals remain quarantined.
