According to a statement issued by the contest organizers, Pabst is a rescue dog adopted by owner Miles Egstad in 2006. The pair hail from California.

While it is the first time a mutt had won the contest in some seven years said the statement, the Chinese crested dogs were still well represented and even won the purebred or pedigree category with the unique looks of winner Miss Ellie.

The two Aussies had been playing with a giant stick in and out of the water when one of them dropped it, and despite being made of wood, it sank out of sight, much to the dismay of the playmates.
